How to get iOS 10: The basics

iOS is the operating system software that runs on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch devices. It's the underlying framework that organises, launches and runs other apps, and can perform a number of features of its own. iOS 10 is the newest update to iOS, and launches officially to the public on 16 September 2016.
If you've got an iPhone 5 (or later, an iPad 4 (or later), an iPad mini 2 or later or a sixth-gen iPod touch, your device is officially rated as iOS 10-compatible, and you can update to iOS 10 for free. (We discuss the list of compatible devices in a little more detail in a later section.)

We discuss iOS 10 as a single entity for most of this article, but we should quickly acknowledge that a number of smaller point upgrades will be released throughout its year-long lifetime. When you update your device to iOS 10 you will automatically get the most recent version that is available.

How to get iOS 10: How to install iOS 10

Once iOS 10 is available to the general public it will be - in principle - very easy to update your iPhone or iPad to iOS 10.
You should get a notification informing you that a new version of iOS is available for you to download; all you need to do is confirm that you're happy to do this. Download the iOS 10 install file, and then install it; the process should take a few hours - don't worry, this is normal - but the length of time depends on the server traffic and how well Apple is coping with it. It's got much better since the huge delays people faced when updating to iOS 6 on launch day.
Haven't got a notification that iOS 10 is ready? Take a look in the Settings app and scroll down to General. Tap Software Update (the second option down), which will have a little '1' if there's an update for you.
iOS will think for a moment and then present you with the update, including the amount of storage space required (you may need to clear some space before downloading) and a link to a 'Learn more' article that tells you about the changes. Simply confirm you wish to upgrade and follow the steps.
If everything is working as it should, updating to iOS 10 should be extremely simple and user-friendly. It's also free.

How to download and install iOS 10 on your iPhone or iPad: Step by step

The update is pushed out to your iPhone or iPad automatically. You just need to go into the software update section of Settings and accept the update. Hopefully you will be lucky and it will work first time.
1) Go to Settings > General > Software Update
This will force your iPhone or iPad to check for the latest updates. (You may get an alert telling you that iOS 10 is ready, in which case you'll just need to tap download.)
2) Tap Download
Your iPhone or iPad will start to download the update.
3) Leave the update to download in the background
Once the download has finished you will receive a notification saying an update is available for your device.
4) Tap Details
This will take you to Settings > General > Software Update.
5) Tap Install Now
The iPhone or iPad will now start to install the iOS update.
You can choose to leave the installation for later. Settings will display a notification badge until you have installed the update.

Apple released iOS 10 Beta 8, which includes a number of bug fixes and improvements.
You can follow these simple instructions to install or update iOS 10 Beta 8 on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.
Install iOS 10 Beta 8 update wirelessly Over the Air (OTA):
Before you start the download, plug in your device so the battery doesn’t drain during the update process. It can take anywhere from 15 mins to an hour for the update to download and install, depending on how Apple’s servers are handling the load and your internet connection. You may also want to connect your iPhone to your local WiFi network, so you don’t get charged for downloading the update over your cellular connection.

Once you are plugged in and connected via WiFi, open the Settings app and tap on General > Software Update. iOS will automatically check for available updates and will inform you that iOS 10 Beta 8 software update is available.Tap Download to download the update. Wait for the download to complete and then tap Install to apply the update. If you get tired of waiting for the download to finish (it could take a while) then go do something else. Your iPhone or iPad will continue to download the update and will send you a notification when the update is ready.  Go back to Settings > General > Software Update and then tap Install Now to install the now downloaded iOS update file.
A note to Jailbreakers: if you’ve used evasi0n, OTA updates will be disabled, which is convenient if you plan to delay updating. If do want to upgrade, you’ll have to restore your device via iTunes as described below.

Some folks prefer to physically connect their iPhone to a computer via a USB cable and update their phone via iTunes. Since you are not dealing with WiFI signal, there is less chance of an error occurring during the download and install process.  Before you plug in your iOS device. take a moment to make sure you are using the latest version of iTunes. Click on iTunes in the menu bar and then click  on “Check for updates.” You can also go directly to Apple’s iTunes download page, which is now allowing you to download iTunes 11.1.3, the most recent version of the media manager.

Once iTunes is all squared away, it’s time to turn your attention to your phone. Connect your iOS device to your computer using an USB cable. Wait for iTunes to open and connect to your device. Click on your device in iTunes and then click the “Check for Update” button in the Summary pane. If an update is available, iTunes will prompt you to download and install the update. Apple has officially announced the iPhone 7 today. The new iPhone features a design that's very similar to last year's iPhone 6S (and the year prior's iPhone 6), with a rounded aluminum body. But what's entirely new is the phone's water resistance, which means you can get the iPhone 7 or the larger iPhone 7 Plus wet without worry. Also new is the long-rumored dual camera system, stereo speakers, and a darker black color scheme. And, as expected, the iPhone 7 does not have a headphone jack, rendering countless 3.5mm headphones useless with the device (or requiring the use of an adapter).

The new phone may look very similar to last year's models, but instead of the matte metal finish we've become used to it, it has a glossy, mirrored design. The new color is called Jet Black and is much darker and richer than the Space Black of years past. Apple is also releasing a standard black model, along with gold, silver, and rose gold.

Apple has redesigned the iconic home button for the iPhone 7, making it force sensitive, like the Force Touch trackpads used in recent MacBook laptops. The phone has also gained the Taptic Engine haptic feedback system from the Apple Watch, which provides different vibration feedback for various alerts.
